Star-Tech Marine Electronics was started December 4, 1989 by Mr. Glenn Lanclos in Erath, Louisiana as a general marine electronics sales and service company primarily servicing the Gulf of Mexico. The business began to grow and increased visibility, the customer base began to encompass several small Gulf of Mexico oilfield workboat fleets.
Through new contacts with several large oilfield workboat operators, the customer base became more oilfield workboat oriented and less of the fishing fleet. With the additional work, the need for expanding the technician base became evident and was accomplished.
In 1994 the decision was made to move the business to Morgan City, Louisiana, which placed the company and its technicians in a more central location for servicing vessels throughout the Gulf of Mexico region. The move proved to be the correct one, as again, the business grew, and again, additional technicians were added to the staff.
In 1998 the growth of the company required another move. This time, a building was purchased and renovated in Berwick, Louisiana and the company began operating out of its current facility. The new location saw the expansion of business and brought with it new opportunities.
In 1999 – 2000 Star-Tech Marine began working with Kongsberg – SIMRAD, Inc. as an installation/service contractor and as a sales agent under an affiliate company, G & H Consultants. By passing on sales leads and assisting with installations, Star-Tech Marine began its participation in the Dynamic Positioning market. Quickly the company became an integral link for assisting end users in selecting the proper vessels and systems to bring their fleets into the DP market. As a result, all five (5) of the technicians on staff at that time had an operational knowledge of DP and were capable of servicing the reference sensors on DP systems. In addition, the two (2) senior technicians attended DP training sessions for technical support of the systems.
The association with Kongsberg – SIMRAD, Inc.,lead to an agreement being reached with Measurement Devices Ltd in 2003 and Star-Tech Marine began selling and servicing their Fan Beam Laser. This gave the company a new avenue to travel down and plans were formulated to bolster the DP side of the market place for both sales and service.
As of October , 2006 , Star-Tech Marine became an authorized service center for MeasurementDevices Ltd. Laser Beams. Previously we offered three factory trained technicians but as of January, 2007, will have a technical staff of seven certified.
Additional Sales and Marketing staff with previous DP experience were added, along with additional vendors and technicians to better round out the choices available for providing reference sensors to DP vessels. Star-Tech Marine is now able to provide not only relative postion reference sensors from MDL, but also Motion/Vertical Reference, True Position Reference, Heading Reference, and Environmental Reference Sensors for a complete package from DP-0 to DP-2 systems.
